Surnames arose when families decided to retain a "pseudo name", such as John de la HALLE for example. The timing of this transition of adopting fixed surnames generally occurred between the 11th and 16th centuries in England and a few centuries later in the rest of Great Britain.
There appears to be no evidence of Hall, or variants such as de Aula, recorded as a surname in the domesday survey of England in 1086/87.
